"THE COMPLETE LESTER YOUNG" by LESTER YOUNG
レスター・ヤング (Lester Young) は、ぼくにとっては謎だらけの人物である。
そもそも彼を知るきっかけとなったのが、ジェフ・ベック (Jeff Beck) とジョニ・ミッチェル (Joni Mitchell) とモノクローム・セット (The Monochrome Set) なのだから、そのみっつの焦点を紡いでみたとしても、茫洋とした人物像が、姿を現す訳ではない。

『フー・アー・ユウ (WHO ARE YOU)』 by ザ・フー (THE WHO) SIDE ONEでは、この作品のタイトルにふたつの解釈があると書いた。
ひとつは『フー・アー・ユー (Who Are You) / お前は誰だ』。
そしてもうひとつは『オレを連れ去ろうとする、お前は誰だ (NOT BE TAKEN AWAY - WHO ARE YOU)』、これはキース・ムーン (Keith Moon) の死をうけて、偶発的にというか、こじつけがましく読んだものだけれども。
ここでは、もうひとつの解釈の可能性を追っかけてみる。

最初は『トムズ・ダイナー [TOM'S DINER]』だった。
ア・カペラ (a cappella)、というよりも呟く様に唄われるその声が、情緒的なものや叙情的なものを排している。唄われている街の叙景がそのまま、今ここにある様に聴こえてくるのだ。

『20 ジャズ・ファンク・グレイツ』 by スロッビング・グリッスル（"THROBBING GRISTLE bring you 20 Jazz Funk Greats" by Throbbing Gristle）
可能性の音楽。この作品を聴く度に、音楽に不可能はないし、音楽というメディアで表現できないものはなにもない、そう想えてならない。
にも、関わらずに、その音楽そのものを語る術があまりに乏しく、不自由極りない、そんな徒労にも似た絶望感に打ちのめされるのも、この作品だ。
1979年発表作品、そして国内盤として僕が手に入れるのがその三年後の1981年。
このタイムラグだけが、その遠因であるとは決して言えないと、想う。

"Stronger Than Pride" by Sade
閑を持て余していた大学生時代の事だったと思う。週末の深夜、というよりももう空は明るみ始めていて、早朝といっていい時分。その部屋に設えてあったTVからは、夜通し、海外アーティストのミュージック・クリップが流れていて、同室のものは皆、観るともなく観ていた。
卓の上には、雀牌が放置されていたのか、山と積まれた吸いさしで灰皿が溢れ還っていたのか、空っぽになっていたボトルが転げていたのか、それは知らない。
ただ、画面の向こうでは、白い大柄のトレンチ・コート (Trench Coat) を着込んだ、褐色の女性が、街を闊歩していたのだ。
それが、初めて観たシャーデー・アデュ (Sade Adu) だった。

"NEW YORK" by LOU REED
随分と待たされたアルバム。以前、どこかで書いた様な気がするけれども、クルト・ワイル (Kurt Weill) のトリビュート・アルバム『星空に迷い込んだ男/クルト・ワイルの世界 (Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill)
素材である原曲によりかかりもせず、かといって、己の音楽性を殊更に際立たせない、そのアプローチがかっこ良かった。
原曲の持つ、甘美なメロディーは一切姿を現さない筈なのに、その曲が描く叙情は総て兼ね備えている。
ロックンロール (Rock & Roll)。
一言で言えば、それ以外のナニモノでもないその曲は、クルト・ワイル (Kurt Weill) のロックンロール (Rock & Roll)でもあると同時に、ルー・リード (Lou Reed) のロックンロール (Rock & Roll)そのものでもあったのだ。

debut records presents; the Quintet' jazz at massey hall
アルバム・ジャケットのほぼ半分を占める扱いながら、その表情がよく見えないアルト・サックス (Alto Saxphone) ・プレイヤーの名前はチャーリー・チャン (Charlie Chan) とクレジットされている。
チャーリー・チャン (Charlie Chan) とは、本作品がレコーディングされた1953年当時、アール・デア・ビガーズ (Earl Derr Biggers) 創造の、中国系の名探偵の名前に他ならない。彼はEarl Derr Biggersの小説から始って、映画やラジオで活躍していた[TVへと進出するのは本作品がレコーディングされた5年後のこと]。
つまり、どういう事かと言うと、本作品にクレジットされているのは真っ赤な偽名であり、その正体はチャーリー・パーカー (Charlie Parker) という。
契約の関係上、名前も顔も伏せなければならなかったからだ。
